The Consecration of Jangchub Chorten At Bhutan’s Highest Point

Her Majesty Queen Jetsun Pema and His Royal Highness Gyalsey Ugyen Wangchuck graced the auspicious consecration ceremony of Jangchub Chorten in Chelela on 28 August 2024.

The Chorten, built under the His Majesty King Jigme Khesar Namgyel Wangchuck, stands as a profound Dharma initiative to honor the birth of His Royal Highness Gyalsey Ugyen Wangchuck.

Perched at one of the highest points in Bhutan, Jangchub Chorten offers breathtaking panoramic views of numerous sacred sites scattered across the Kingdom. This landmark is not just a spiritual beacon but also a testament to Bhutan’s rich heritage, rooted in prophecy and faith.

The construction of Jangchub Chorten fulfills a long-standing prophecy by the revered Terton Drukdra Dorje, who foretold that a Chorten built at this site would protect Drukyul and bring immense benefit to the country and its people. Initiated in February 2021, the construction was completed in August 2024, marking a significant milestone in Bhutan’s spiritual history.

This sacred monument is dedicated to the eternal safeguarding and blessing of the Tsawa Sum, enriching Bhutan’s spiritual legacy and fostering a sense of peace and protection for generations to come.

The consecration ceremony was presided over by His Eminence Dorji Lopen in the esteemed presence of Her Majesty, HRH Gyalsey Ugyen Wangchuck, Their Majesties Gyalyum Tshering Yangdoen Wangchuck, Gyalyum Sangay Choden Wangchuck, HRH Princess Dechen Yangzom Wangchuck, Yum Sonam Chuki, alongside the members of the Chorten construction committee and the dedicated Desuups who contributed to the development of the grounds surrounding Jangchub Chorten.

Jangchub Chorten is located in Chele Lathe highest road pass in the Kingdom.

How to visit Jangchub Chorten?

Chele La Pass, one of the highest motorable passes in Bhutan, is located between the Paro and Haa valleys. It offers stunning views of the Himalayas and the valleys below. Here's how you can visit Chele La Pass:

1. From Paro

  • Distance: Approximately 35-40 km from Paro.
  • Travel Time: Around 1.5 to 2 hours by car.
  • Route:
    • From Paro town, take the road towards Bondey, and continue on the Paro-Haa highway.
    • The scenic drive will take you through forests of pine and rhododendron as you climb towards the pass.

2. From Haa Valley

  • Distance: Around 26 km from Haa town.
  • Travel Time: About 1.5 hours by car.
  • Route:
    • Drive along the Haa-Paro highway, following the road as it winds up towards the pass.
    • The journey from Haa Valley offers beautiful landscapes and views of the surrounding mountains.

3. Hiring a Vehicle

If you're traveling from Thimphu or another part of Bhutan, it's best to hire a private taxi or a tour vehicle as public transport may not be available directly to Chele La Pass. Most hotels or tour operators in Bhutan can arrange transportation for you.

4. By Trekking (Optional)

For those seeking adventure, trekking to Chele La Pass is also an option. Some treks in Bhutan, like the one from Paro to Haa, take trekkers through the Chele La Pass area, offering a more immersive experience of the landscape.
