These sessions covered essential aspects like lighting, weather, and behavioral conditions, which are critical to capturing successful wildlife images.

Celebrated globally for his work, Galitz shared his photography expertise with Bhutanese filmmakers, photographers, and students. He emphasized that photography is a powerful communication tool that can profoundly influence how people perceive the world. "Through photography, individuals can share their unique perspectives and inspire others," he said.

These masterclasses were part of the lead-up to the inaugural Kingdom of Bhutan International Film Festival (KBIFF) 2024, scheduled for September 17-27. Organized by the Bhutan Film Institute (BFI), a non-profit registered with the Civil Society Organisation Authority, the festival aims to showcase the art of filmmaking and celebrate Bhutan’s cultural heritage.

Galitz found his visit to Bhutan deeply enriching, praising the country’s hospitality and commitment to nature conservation. “Bhutan has been an extraordinary experience,” he said. He also highlighted photography’s role in raising environmental awareness, especially in a country known for its natural beauty and conservation efforts. “In Bhutan, where travel can be challenging, particularly in remote areas, photography plays a crucial role in connecting people to the country’s nature and its inhabitants,” he added.

Galitz also discussed Bhutan’s potential as a global destination for photographers and filmmakers, describing it as a place where cultural heritage is preserved in a way rarely seen in the modern world. “Visiting Bhutan is akin to traveling back in time,” he noted, acknowledging the challenges of wildlife photography in Bhutan due to its inaccessibility and the elusive nature of its wildlife, but emphasizing the immense potential for future exploration.

Expressing his interest in collaborating with local experts, Galitz stated, “I recognize the importance of working with local Bhutanese wildlife photographers and experts.” A representative from BFI remarked that Galitz’s work resonates with Bhutan’s values of environmental conservation, saying, “We are deeply moved by the expertise, tenacity, and passion that Roie has put into his craft.”

The KBIFF 2024, the first international film festival of its kind in Bhutan, is expected to draw hundreds of filmmakers from around the world. The festival will feature a range of films, discussions, and events aimed at celebrating the art of filmmaking and fostering global appreciation for Bhutanese cinema. Among the featured masterclasses, Indian composer Shantanu Moitra, known for his work on iconic Bollywood films like ‘Parineeta,’ ‘Three Idiots,’ ‘PK,’ and ‘Lage Raho Munna Bhai,’ will lead a session. Additionally, Christian Jeune, Director of the Film Department at Festival de Cannes, will also conduct a masterclass during the festival.
