The annual Drukyul Literary Festival is the celebration of the country's literary heritage and promoting a culture of reading and writing. The festival is held in Thimphu, the capital city of Bhutan under the Royal Patronage of Her Majesty the Queen Mother Ashi Dorji Wangmo Wangchuck. It features various activities, including book readings, panel discussions, workshops, and cultural performances. It provides a platform for Bhutanese and international writers to exchange ideas and engage in conversations about literature, art, and culture.
Previously, the Drukyul Literary Festival was known as Mountain Echoes; the country of Bhutan's first literary festival. It was co-founded by Her Majesty The Queen Mother Ashi Dorji Wangmo Wangchuck as Bhutan-India initiative in 2010. In the past ten years, the festival has hosted authors from around the world, including Pico Iyer, Ruskin Bond, and Vikram Seth, as well as current writers from Bhutan, including Aum Kunzang Choden and Her Majesty the Queen Mother, who is herself a well-known writer.
The event began its new era when COVID-19 swept the globe in 2020. With restrictions on international travel and big-scale public gatherings, the event was initiated through social media, online event and editorial publications toe, to encourage greater local participation. Later, His Majesty the King of Bhutan renamed the event "Drukyul's Literary Festival.
Attending this literary festival in Bhutan, which is the only carbon-negative country in the world, can be a life-changing experience. The festival brings together an array of distinguished authors, thought leaders, and agents of change from different parts of the world. For over ten years, the Drukyul Literary Festival has offered an open and inclusive platform for various ideas. This year the festival will be held from 4th to 6th August which will have various programs like popup art exhibition, music performance, interactive workshops, spoken-word open mic nights, poetry readings, film screening and many more.
