Oie, an online taxi booking and dispatching mobile app, which is expected to cut waiting time for both drivers and passengers was launched in Thimphu on April 27.

The app has two parts – Oiedrive for the passengers and Oiedriver for the taxi drivers. It can also enable travel at odd times and to relatively inaccessible locations.

The partner and director of DrukSmart, Pema Tshering said that a study done by the company showed that taxi drivers spent 40 percent of their time and fuel in search of passengers.

Advantages of using the Oie app

The taxi booking app is designed to take ‘convenience’ to a whole new level for both taxi drivers and customers. In fact, convenience and safety are the cornerstones of this app.

As customers search for taxis using the apps, the drivers registered with the apps get notified immediately.

The drivers can also easily trace locations of customers with the help of the apps. “Through this app we expect to save time as well as fuel by bridging the passengers and the drivers.”

A press release stated that Oie will enable taxi drivers to increase their income substantially. It can also ensure credibility and safety of the passengers through immediate access to the database of driver profiles.

A taxi driver, Tshering Lhendup said that the app not only provides security for the passengers, but also helps taxi drivers in case a passenger runs away without paying. It is a win-win situation for both parties.

“Safety for both drivers and passengers can be ensured through this online service as details will remain in the system,” Tshering Lhendup, a Taxi Driver registered with OIE, said.

“A lot of people said that the service has proved useful especially when they need to take a taxi during late night hours. The women users said that the app makes them feel secure.”

“Passengers can also easily claim their personal belongings if they forget them in the taxi since they can trace the taxi number and name of the driver through the app.”

How does the Oie app work?

Passengers can log in to the app through their facebook account or use their mail ID and phone number. The service which can be availed 24/7 automatically dials to the nearest taxi driver available when a passenger picks a destination.

If the driver does not answer within 20 seconds, the call is directed to the next nearest driver. Passengers can know whether their request is accepted through the app and through the message alerts.

Based on the Road Safety and Transport Authority (RSTA) rates, the app also provides the estimated cost of the journey.

Pema Tshering said that the Oie app provides a convenient and reliable door-to-door taxi facility.

Oie looks set to expand in Bhutan

“Harnessing the accessibility of mobile technologies and 100 percent connectivity in Bhutan, Oie comes at an opportune time for Bhutanese to acquire the comfort of mobile technologies like most other places in the world.”

The app is available for both iOS and android users. However, it is currently available in Paro and Thimphu only.

Currently, there are more than 90 taxi drivers and more than 1,000 passengers from Thimphu and Paro registered with Oie.

More than 600 taxi drivers have expressed interest in using the app and have enrolled with the company. As of December 2017, there are 4,455 taxis in the country with 2, 926 in the Thimphu region alone.
