Nge Tsawai Lama, a story of hope, aspiration and hard work

‘Nge Tsawai Lama’ is literally translated as ‘My Root Guru’. It is a story about how Gyem Dorji, who plays Lopen Pema, teaches in a remote school. He helps and inspires an orphan named Yonten, played by Tashi Pee Dorji, to realise his dreams of being educated.

The fictional village of Tashiling in Punakha remains etched in many Bhutanese hearts following a popular dialogue by Ap Gembo from the movie ‘Chepai Bu’. The villages will certainly enchant many Bhutanese moviegoers with its rural beauty and charm.

The story revolves around Yonten, whose only guardian Angay Zam, played by Aum Karma, refuses to send him to school. Lopen Pema and his friend Wangchuk, played by Sonam R Kuensel, helps him to educate himself without going through formal education. Yonten learns while herding cattle, working or at home under the moonlight.

It is also a story about how an ‘egg’ shapes the life of Yonten, as it robs him of his youthful innocence and priorities in life.

Produced by Phuntshok Wangdi and Wangchuk Talop, ‘Nge Tsawai Lama’ entertains its viewers with a sad tale about dreams, aspirations, love and friendship.

Despite a male-dominated cast, the only female role that stands out in the movie is that of Pasa Om, played by Sherab Lhamo. She is a pretty village girl who carries herself with confidence and manages to lure Yonten with an egg. She entangles herself in Yonten and Wangchuk’s lives, changing them.

With witty and entertaining dialogues, the film has a strong plot and character development. Narrated by the veteran actor Gyem Dorji, his son Tashi Pee Dorji and an equally talented newcomer by the name of Sonam R Kuensel, viewers will not feel that the movie is two hours long.

A movie worthy of watching, it conveys quite persuasively, the message that education is important.
