Founded by Sushanta Sharma, 29, in 2016, ‘Sushi’s Candles & Crafts’ is a small scale candle and handmade crafts manufacturing unit.

It was initially started in Thimphu but due to some problems, Sushanta shifted her unit to Sibsoo, Samtse last year.

Currently the manufacturing unit produces scented candles, flower pots, vases and other homemade crafts.

The graduate from the University of Sikkim (2014) said that candle and craft making have been her hobbies since was young but she has never imagined that she would come this far.

“I took my hobby seriously and I am very happy that it turned into a money making business,” Sushanta said.

In fact, she came in third in the ‘Business Idea Competition’ (start-up category) in 2018. Her business also received support from the Department of Cottage and Small Industry and were funded by the Loden Foundation and Druk Holding and Investments (DHI).

Help from Druk Holding and Investments revived Sushanta’s business

Initially, it was difficult for Sushanta to operate her business. She made very simple candles using ordinary packaging, thus business did not go as expected.

Her luck changed when Druk Holding and Investments (DHI) sponsored her for a basic candle making course in India in 2017.

“I learnt a lot from the training and discovered many flaws in my ways of making candles,” Sushanta said.

Ever since she came back from her training, her skills have improved and now she is able to make good quality products.

Today, she even gets orders from renowned hotels such as Bhutan Spiritual Sanctuary and Terma Linca.

‘Sushi’s Candles & Crafts’ also has a Facebook page where clients can order her products.

“So now I am very confident about my business,” said Sushanta. Currently, she works alone most of the time but she sometimes employs one or two helpers when she gets bulk orders.

Sushanta’s dreams for her company

One of Sushanta’s dreams is to make regular white candles in different sizes for big companies like Zimdra Implex.

She is also concentrating on making affordable birthday candles with better designs as many bakery shops have been requesting her to do it.

“I also have an order for candle making molds as hotels and restaurants are interested in it,” she said.

Sushanta’s business boomed when her candles were sold in huge quantities during the Diwali festival and she raked in around Nu.0.1million.

On top of that, she also supplies candles to five dzongkhags in Bhutan: Paro, Thimphu, Samtse, Phuentsholing, Gelephu and Gomtu.

Challenges which Sushanta has to face

One of the challenges which Sushanta faces is that she is a female entrepreneur. She finds it tough to juggle both ‘home and business’ together.

However, Sushanta really enjoys her work and she wants to set a shining example for more women in Bhutan to fulfil their dreams of starting their own businesses.

“I feel very proud when young girls and women come up to me, saying that I inspire them. More women entrepreneurs should come out without fear and take the opportunities available.’’
