Bhutanese Sonam Rigzin Played As Goalkeeper For His Team ‘King Cobra’ In The F4F World Championship In Russia

After three days of training at the international friendship camp in Moscow, Russia along with other young ambassadors from 211 countries, Sonam Rigzin played Football for Friendship (F4F) World Championship on June 12 at the Sapsan Arena.

The championship saw 32 different teams comprising of young players from across the world competing to win the F4F world champions title.

Teams named after endangered animal species of the world

The event this year named the teams after endangered species of the world. The initiative was aimed at drawing attention to the problems of the extinction of rare animals.

Of the total 32 international mixed teams of friendship, Sonam Rigzin played as a goalkeeper along with the young players from the Netherlands, Djibouti, Guam and Namibia to form the team ‘King Cobra’.

The team was placed in Group-C along with the teams- three-toed sloth, Roth chi’s Giraffe and Chimpanzee.

Team King Cobra lost to Chimpanzee 0-2 to end their championship in the qualifying round. Team Chimpanzee comprised of players from the Dominican Republic, Malawi, Colombia, Benin and Congo which won the F4F World Championship 2018.

At the opening ceremony of the final match between team Chimpanzee and the Komodo Dragons on June 12, Sonam Rigzin walked into the Sapsena Arena bearing the national flag to open the finals.

Aims of bringing children from across the world together to play football

The Director General of the Russian Football Union, Alexander Alaev said that the project which brought together children from across the world was important for sports and personal growth.

“It was amazing that just in three days of the friendship camp the children have managed to become friends and demonstrated a real team game,” he said.

The 6th season of the international children’s social programmes for the first time saw young players and young journalists come together to learn the important values of peace, devotion, victory, traditions and honour through football.

The Chairman of the board of directors with PJSC Gazprom Victor Zubkov said that we live in an age where people over the world seek to unite behind the principles of equality and respect for each other.

“The project is a crucial element in this process. Football for friendship gives that opportunity to everyone,” he said.

Children with disabilities were also involved the games

The global event organised by the Gazprom Company, the official partner of FIFA and World Cup Russia 2018 also involved children with disabilities and a special award of Nine Values Cup for the greatest commitment to all F4F values.

The cup this year was presented to the Brazilian national football team at the international children forum.

Kinley Deki who participated in the event as a young journalist said that the camp was about learning the F4F nine values of friendship, equality, fairness, health, peace, devotion, victory, traditions and honour and applying them in daily lives.

“Representing the country as a young journalist gave me an opportunity to write articles for the football for friendship newspaper. It was an exciting experience in the camp and a good opportunity for the friendship and also to showcase our culture to others,” Kinley Deki said.
