From 2 to 7 February 2019, Her Royal Highness Princess Eeuphelma Choden Wangchuck and the President of the Bhutan Paralympic Committee attended the General Assembly of the Asian Paralympic Committee (APC) in Dubai, UAE.

The General Assembly is the highest decision-making body of the Asian Paralympic Movement. The key agenda at this General Assembly is to elect the APC Executive Board Members.

Five members are given the Asian Order for their remarkable contributions

This is the fifth Conference held by the APC, during which five members were presented with the Asian Order for their outstanding contributions towards the Paralympic Movement.

The members were: Mr Mohamed Al Hameli, who has helped grow the Movement "rapidly" in the UAE over the past decade; Kazakhstan’s Paralympic Committee vice-president Kairat Boranbayev ,who built a Paralympic training centre in Astana with his own money; Myung Ho Lee from South Korea; and Raja Sapta Oktohari from Indonesia and the Olympic Council of Asia.

Myung received the Order for his help in forming the Unified Korean teams at the 2018 Asian Para Games and Mr Oktohari was given the Order for his work as the chair of the 2018 Asian Para Games Organising Committee.

A total of 41 National Paralympic Committees (NPC) attended the event with over 200 officials from all across Asia.

From among the 43 NPCs, four were invited to present and share their success stories and one of them was from Bhutan.

Other events on the agenda include a review of last year’s Asian Para Games in Jakarta in Indonesia and a report on the body’s finances.

There was also discussions concerning the 2019 budget and presentations on the upcoming Para events inTokyo 2020, Beijing 2022 as well as the 2022 Asian Para Games in Hangzhou.

The presentation by the Bhutan Paralympic Committee (BPC) gave an insight into the development and progress made by the BPC since its establishment.

The presentation ended with a short inspirational video on a para-athlete, Kinley Dem, a paraplegic shooter.

The video illustrated her journey with the BPC and how it has changed her life.

The BPC was founded in September, 2017 with the vision to make sports inclusive. It also aimed to inspire all Bhutanese living with impairment and to provide them with opportunities to participate and excel in sports.

Her Royal Highness (HRH) Princess Eeuphelma Choden Wangchuck also granted an audience to Mr. Andrew Parsons, the President of the International Paralympic Committee on the 3rd of February, 2019.

During the meeting, HRH and Mr. Parsons spoke on how best to develop Paralympics as an inclusive sports in Bhutan.

HRH also met up with Mr. Majid Rashed, the President of the Asian Paralympic Committee, President and officials of the Korean Paralympic Committee, the Japanese Paralympic Committee and various other members of the APC.
