To enable citizens of Bhutan to participate and contribute ideas for its 21st Century Economic Roadmap, the Gross National Happiness Commission (GNHC) launched a website and social media platform on 23 February.

Purpose of the 21st Century Economic Roadmap

Bhutan’s 21st Century Economic roadmap, which will be developed within this year, is expected to guide the county’s economic development over the next ten years.

The launch of this website is another step towards the development of Bhutan’s economic roadmap.

While different committees and groups have already been formed to work on the roadmap, the website is expected to further engage all citizens of the country.

According to the commission, this will help strengthen understanding of the direction in which Bhutan must head and to create a strong sense of ownership and responsibility for the country’s progress amongst its citizens.

Plans to be proposed to the high-level round table committee

The need to develop a clear economic roadmap for the 21st century is to create economic opportunities for the next generation, as it was one of the key messages from the Royal Address during Bhutan’s National Day last year.

Our neighbours, India and China, are experiencing unprecedented economic growth, propelled by technological advances in Artificial Intelligence, Robotics, Automation, Big Data, Blockchain, Quantum Computers, and FinTech – Digital Currencies, Digital Wallets, Digital Banking.

The world is changing rapidly. We cannot afford to avoid what we don’t yet understand, and hope for the best. Such an attitude will cost us our national objective of self reliance.

We have to create economic opportunities for the next generation. It’s time to recalibrate ourselves to succeed in the fast-paced world. The government, lawmakers, the private sector, the people, and experts in various fields must work collectively to chart out a clear economic roadmap for the 21st Century- this will help every individual and entity to understand their respective roles and work towards a common national objective.”

Since then, a High-Level Roundtable Committee has been instituted. The formulation of the roadmap will be spearheaded by a National taskforce which has eleven members from the different sectors beyond the civil service.

They will be making plans over the next 12 months and final proposals will be submitted to the high-level round table committee, led by Bhutan’s Prime Minister.

The vision for the country and the Bhutanese people has been clearly articulated by His Majesty The King over the years through numerous Royal Addresses to the nation and is also enshrined in the country’s Constitution.

Where the country needs to go has been set, what remains is to determine how we get there in a manner that is in keeping with GNH values.

Bhutan’s 21st Century Economic Roadmap will draw on His Majesty's articulated vision and outline his main strategies in key economic priority areas.
