To reward and motivate exceptional Bhutanese youth, 80 tenth-graders took part in the 11th Golden Youth Award (GYA) camp, which began in Thimphu on 9 July.

The camp’s theme ‘Celebrating Unity for Excellence’, is a pledge by the youth to be advocators and agents of peace, harmony and tranquillity.

The GYA programme which began in 2008 is a platform to inspire youth to excel holistically. It also aims at motivating youth who portray excellence beyond the academic realm.

The Executive Director of the Bhutan Youth Development Fund (YDF), Dorji Ohm said that the YDF has had different groups of young people in the camp held annually.

“Golden Youth is not a competition but it is an experience towards building excellence.”

Organised by the YDF, about 30 volunteers from the Young-Volunteers In Action also helped out at the camp.

Inculcating the values of GNH in the participating students

Unlike the past years, the students attended GNH values workshop for three days this year which ended on July 8.

The Programme Officer for Youth Participation and Child protection, Tenzin Wangchuk said that it was to make students aware of the values of GNH.

“Instead of the social service activities such as whitewashing, cleaning surroundings and plantations, students will be participating in edutainment.”

Harnessing the merits of edutainment

Recognising the potential and impact of entertainment to advocate, students will help in creating awareness through entertainment activities in about three open places, he said.

They will participate in programmes on talent, innovation lab, edutainment and sports.

During the camp, students are also expected to exchange ideas and perspectives on issues affecting their lives in their communities.

The camp also allows students to use the innovation laboratory where they were taught to write better idea proposals and refine them.

By the end of the programme, a micro site was be dedicated for youth to share their ideas and thoughts.

Scholarship to study abroad for the winner of the Golden Youth Award

Moreover, the camp also organised the Golden Youth Award in which the winner will receive a scholarship to study in a prestigious college abroad. To date, there are seven winners who had received the scholarship for higher studies overseas.

Tenzin Wangchuk said that this year, in addition to the winners, there is a new award for ‘special recognition’.

“Participants would choose the person through the Electronic Voting Machine. It will also help students experience and learn about the voting procedure.”

Tenzin Wangchuk said that after the announcement of the GYA camp, schools will nominate eligible students and send the details to the dzongkhag sub-committee.

“Only after that we will receive the finalised list.”

The winners of the GYA camp will be announced in the closing event on July 15.
