The Media students of Sherubtse College are interning in media houses in the capital, Thimphu and Trashigang during the winter break.

They hope to learn and apply what they have studied in the college by interacting with professional journalists.

BA in Media course offered only in Sherubtse College

Sherubtse College is the only college in the country, which provides BA in Media course with a combination of two other subjects: English and Dzongkha.

The course was first introduced in 2012.

The Media students of Sherubtse College are mandated to do internship after their fifth semester, which falls during the winter vacation.

The program leader of the Media Department of Sherubtse College, Anju Chetteri, said that it is mandatory for media students to do an internship because the media course is new compared to other courses in the college.

“The media students need more experience in their field as compared to the students from other courses,” said Anju Chetteri.

How the media internship benefits college students

Tenzin Thinley, who is currently doing his internship in Kuensel at Thimphu said that the internship provides him with opportunities to meet high-level officials and attend important events and occasions.

He also said that he is able to experience how a professional journalist works. Almost three weeks into his internship, and he has already published four articles in Kuensel.

Tshering Dekar, another intern in the Bhutan Broadcasting Service (BBS) at Kanglung, Trashigang who was working along with five more friends, said that they were taught how to report and interview in the field by senior reporters and were made to write trial news for broadcasting.

Tshewang Dorji, an intern at the Bhutan Film Association said that he gets to interact with many people and has made new friends. He also said that he has experienced how to live independently without his parents.

The Producer of Dzongkha Section in BBS Deki Choden who is supervising four media students from Sherubtse College said that the students are really energetic and enthusiastic to learn.

Advantages of hands on sessions

Although BBS is not able to provide separate theory class for the media students, she takes the students along with her to live show studio and teaches them practicals starting from the backdrop stage.

Now the students can do all the basic arrangements in the studio without her. “The students have developed their communication skills.”

All the media students have to do internship for a month.
