The Bhutanese have spoken. Over 305,000 voters have sent Druk Nyamrup Tshogpa (DNT) to parliament after polls closed yesterday (Oct 18).

DNT secured 30 seats out of 47 seats in the National Assembly to become the ruling party till the next election, while its opponent, Druk Phuensum Tshogpa (DPT) won 17 seats, making up the new opposition party. DNT’s President Dr Lotay Tshering, 50, will effectively become Bhutan’s next prime minister.

A total of 305,408 voters out of 438,663 registered voters turned out to vote today.

Results from the polls show DNT’s stronghold over the western and southern parts of Bhutan, while DPT secured mostly the eastern dzongkhags only.

In a press conference held by DNT, Dr Lotay Tshering thanked voters for their support and DPT “for a hard fought campaign.”

“This election outcome is a result of our collective wisdom and prayers to realise a better, happier Bhutan,” wrote DNT on Facebook.

It also added that they look forward to sitting with all political parties in the next few weeks to sketch out a roadmap for Vision 2045.

DPT President Pema Gyamtsho spoke to BBS and said he accepted the results and congratulated Dr Lotay Tshering and his candidates.

“DPT focused on economic self-reliance and I feel maybe not everyone understood that well. Democracy is about people’s choice”, said Pema Gyamtsho.

In a Facebook post, DPT also expressed their congratulations to DNT and said that they were “humbled and will remain indebted to all the people of this peaceful country for supporting us.”

This is Bhutan’s third general election. The primary round of elections was held in September, where four parties contested to make it to the General Election.
