As committed by Bangladesh’s Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina during her visit to Bhutan last year, Dhaka will be donating Nu 168mn worth of medicine to Bhutan.

258 essential medicines were handed over by the Health Minister of Bangladesh, Mohammed Nasim to the Ambassador Sonam T. Rabgye in Bangladesh on 30 July.

Donation of medicine from Bangladesh will help to cut down cost of procurement for Bhutan

The Director General of the Department of Medical Services, Dr. Pandup Tshering said that the medicines donated by Bangladesh’s government will help to cut down costs for the procurement of essential medicines for the fiscal year 2018-2019.

He added that the health ministry has been able to maintain the availability of essential drugs to above 95%.

“The latest is that the health ministry has been able to maintain 99% availability of essential medicines across health facilities,” he said.

Essential medicines, meanwhile, are those that satisfy the priority heath care needs of the Bhutanese population.

It was in 2015 when the Health Trust Fund took over the financing of all essential drugs and vaccines in the country. The data maintained with the health ministry states that, as of 2016, there are 429 modern medicines and 114 traditional medicines facilities in Bhutan.

Medicine from Bangladesh will be delivered in three phases

It is also stated that the consignment of medicines will be delivered in three phases, September, October and November this year, according to the health ministry.

Dr. Pandup Tshering said that apart from medicines, the other areas of cooperation with Bangladesh are in health human resource training.

“Many of our doctors and other health professionals get training in Bangladesh,” he said.

“Bangladesh and Bhutan share a special bond of friendship and understanding which rests in their history and political leadership since Bhutan became the first country to recognise Bangladesh’s independence on December 6, 1971,” the press release states.
