In the 15 years of my life, the funniest yet saddest movie I have ever watched is Gyalsey, the legacy of a prince. Aired first in 2012, this movie touched many hearts with its melancholic story with a romantic twist.

Synopsis of Gyalsey, the Legacy of a Prince

The male protagonist is Jamyang Jamtsho Wangchuk and the female protagonist is Sangay Choden Tenzin. Owing to his evocative acting, Jamyang Jamtsho was awarded the Best Newcomer Male Award.

It is a tragic story where the two of them who were brought together by destiny is separated as Sangay dies from a tumor. Mourning over the loss of his love, Jamyang decides to save the lives of others.

He donates his own organs for the happiness of others even though it was against the rules for a living, breathing person to donate organs in Bhutan. Through the movie I have cried as much as I have laughed.

What I have learnt from watching this movie

I have interpreted this movie in a very deep way. People are selfish animals who are satisfied as long as they have what they want.

However, this movie has taught me that real happiness lies in making others happy. The actors’ performance furthermore enhanced the values that the movie had to teach us.

Also directed by the actor, Jamyang Jamtsho, the movie has reached an international audience and was loved by people worldwide. Although it was his first movie direction, it was a great success in the Bhutanese Film Industry.

Unlike many Bhutanese movies, ‘Gyalsey’ drives away from the war between classes. Sangay is from a highly educated, rich and caring family but she lost her mother to cancer.

On the other hand, Jamyang was raised by his relatives as both his parents died in an accident. He grew up in a village and was not from a rich background.

Gyalsey is a movie with a lot of values to learn for a lifetime. It is worth the two and half hours you spend.

I would recommend everyone who has not already watched this movie to do so. It is both entertaining and imparts important moral values as well.
