Bhutan Removes Mandatory Travel Insurance for Tourists

Bhutan's Department of Tourism has announced the elimination of the compulsory travel insurance obligation for tourists.

Initially instated during the COVID-19 pandemic to offer protection for unforeseen emergencies, particularly medical expenses related to the pandemic, this requirement is now being lifted.

Removal of mandatory travel insurance

This decision is part of the the government's efforts to streamline travel procedures and enhance convenience for tourists visiting the country. Although the mandatory need for travel insurance has been removed for Bhutan visa processing, tourists are still encouraged by the Department of Tourism to obtain travel insurance as a precautionary measure.

This is to ensure they have sufficient coverage in case of any unlikely emergencies associated with international travel.

Through the removal of the obligatory travel insurance requirement, Bhutan aims to simplify the visa application process and inspire more visitors to explore its distinctive culture, landscapes, and heritage.

This change underscores Bhutan's dedication to providing tourists with a welcoming and stress-free experience while prioritizing their safety and well-being.

Do you require a visa to travel to Bhutan?

All international tourists, except for visitors from India, Bangladesh, and the Maldives, need a visa to enter Bhutan. Indian visitors require a permit, while nationals of Bangladesh and the Maldives are eligible for a visa on arrival.

Indian nationals enjoy a visa-free entry regime with Bhutan, thanks to the strong diplomatic ties between the two countries, which are also geographical neighbours. However, Indian travellers need to acquire an entry permit if they plan to enter Bhutan by road.
